Il fréquente les forêts claires et de bords de cours d'eau, les parcs et les jardins, où il peut trouver de vieux arbres pour nicher.

Il est assez commun dans toute la Picardie.

C'est un oiseau migrateur, qui se reproduit notamment en Picardie et qui passe l'hiver au sud du Sahara.

C'est un oiseau méconnu, assez discret de part son plumage et son chant. Il aime chasser les insectes à l'affut, perché sur un branche ou un fil électrique. C'est un chasseur redoutable pour le monde des insectes.
